Sooper Dooper Looper Death

The Sooper Dooper Looper is a classic looping roller coaster that has been thrilling visitors to Hersheypark since its opening in 1977. However, even the most well-designed and carefully maintained coasters can still experience accidents, as demonstrated in the case of the Sooper Dooper Looper accident that occurred in 1999.

On July 17, 1999, a 28-year-old man was riding the Sooper Dooper Looper with his family when he was thrown from the coaster during a loop. Despite the efforts of park personnel and emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital.

An investigation revealed that the accident was caused by a combination of factors, including a failure in the coaster’s restraint system, inadequate maintenance practices, and inadequate staff training. The park implemented several changes and improvements in response to the accident, including the installation of new restraints, increased staff training and safety protocols, and enhanced maintenance procedures.

The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with roller coasters and other amusement park attractions, and the importance of maintaining strict safety standards and procedures. Roller coasters are designed to provide thrilling experiences, but their speed, height, and twists and turns can also create significant forces that must be carefully managed to ensure rider safety.
